Swimming with Babies and Toddlers

Introducing your infant or toddler to the many pleasures and benefits of an early experience in the water can be fun, exciting and beneficial for the whole child and entire family.  Teaching your little one to swim is even more beneficial, especially if you live near or around a body of water such as a backyard pool or lake.

Where babies are concerned, they have no inherent fear of the water.  After all, they where surrounded by it for several months while in the womb.  Not to mention that they also have a natural and instinctual ability to hold their breath when submerged.

Researchers have documented that the “stimulating effect of child-paced infant/toddler swimming lessons have the potential to increase intelligence, concentration, social and emotional alertness, and perceptual abilities.” This is especially noted in babies starting lessons prior to 12 months of age; but it’s never too late of course to receive these unique and subtle benefits of infant-toddler swimming.  These babies eventually become extremely peaceful and relaxed in and around the water.

On the occasion your little one is not fond of the water, which not all babies and toddlers are, then after trying a few times of assurances in the water, you may want to wait and try again another time.  It is never recommended to force your child to be in the water.

When looking for the right swimming program, a child-centered approach is recommended.  This is a program which gives you and your baby a peaceful and fun experience while you are right there as their coach guided by a certified instructor.

Finding a program in your area that believes in the “gentle” path is a must.  You want to locate a program that teaches with you and your child in a nurturing, fun, at-ease environment.

Moms, Dads as well as Grandparents can take advantage of some of these wonderful programs going on in your neighborhoods now.
