Vaccines - What You Need to Know

Vaccines are very important to our society.  There are several diseases that we have kept at bay, and it would result in tragedy were they to be set loose again.  However, there is also something to be said for natural immunities, and also what sort of damage quick-fix immunities might cause.  These two points are great points of contentions with doctors and parents alike.

It is speculated whether the demise of child diseases like smallpox, polio, or diphtheria have been relegated to text books because of the vaccines, or because of the improvement of public sanitation, personal hygiene, or better nutrition.  These sorts of details have become better even within the last 70 years, and are very important to the health and safety of infants.

Because of the loose use of vaccines as instant cures, it cannot be a perfect fix all the time.  Modern medicine is guilty of its prepackaged attitude.  Unlike non-western medicinal practices, we tend to look at a person’s symptoms as the clues to what ails them, instead of looking at the person themselves.  Doctors ask whether they are sneezing or coughing, rather than asking where they have been hanging around or what their diets have been.  All ailments have to fit into a nice neat little list of problems.  What if it wasn’t something that was ever covered in medical school?

With these attitudes, it is no wonder that the vaccines are given without prejudice to every baby and individual child that rolls by, without taking into consideration what the child’s family health history is or other factors that may be important.  Because of these interchangeable vaccines, it is speculated that some of the vaccines suggested may not mesh properly with certain babies’ body chemistry.  Links between infant vaccines and chemical imbalances, and problems such as Autism *, specifically, are being researched right now.  Some parents choose to decline giving their baby a vaccine, despite the risks this might cause.  However, many believe that it is simply exchanging one risk for another.

It is possible to decline certain vaccines, when your child is an infant.  You can wait until your child is older, and it may not affect them negatively when they are older.  Consult with your doctor, and others, in order to form a well-balanced opinion.  Although the risks of vaccines are up for debate, there is also the idea that the lack of once dangerous diseases may have lulled parents into a false sense of security.  Just be sure that you, as parents, are well-informed in your decision making.
